How to Spend an Awesome Winter Day at Ober Gatlinburg

Some people are surprised to find out that the Smoky Mountains has its own ski resort, right in Gatlinburg.  They are even more surprised to discover that the aerial tramway from downtown takes you straight up the mountain directly to the Ober Gatlinburg ski resort.

Two advanced, six intermediate and two beginner runs ensure that everyone can hit the slopes, no matter your skill level.  You also can do plenty of other activities, such as tubing, ice skating, viewing wildlife, shopping and dining.  Even better, make a day of it and do it all.

Head up to the slopes

Begin your Ober Gatlinburg day with skiing or snowboarding on the mountain, anytime from mid-December to mid-March, depending on the snow conditions.  If you like a bit of extreme activity, go to the terrain park and try to defy gravity with jumps, flips and twists off different jibs.  Complete sets of rental equipment are available if you haven’t brought your own.  Don’t worry if you haven’t done either sport before, as the resort offers one-hour group lessons or private lessons.

Take a lunch break

After flying down the runs all morning, you’ll need some refueling.  Go to the Seasons of Ober Restaurant and select a delicious entree inspired by German, American and regional Southern cooking.  A bonus here is the breathtaking view as you enjoy your lunch.  Have you worked up a ferocious appetite? Try the fiery BBQ burger or the Ober Gatlin-burger.

Glide on ice, tube down the hill or visit some critters

Now choose your own adventure.  Either put on some ice skates at the year-round indoor rink, zip down a chute on the winter-only snow tubing hill, or see bears and other animals at the Wildlife Encounter.  If you choose the second, buy your tickets in advance in the Tramway mall at the beginning of the day to avoid sellouts.

Indulge in retail therapy

After your full and enjoyable day of activities, slow it down and browse one of the two malls in the resort complex. Both the Tramway mall at the base and the Shops at Ober at the top of the mountain offer some interesting shopping options.  Look for a great souvenir at Tramway Gifts, or rejuvenate your tired muscles and joints at the Spa to Go.

Enjoy some apres

Apres ski, where you relax in the resort and have a drink, is a ritual everyone can enjoy even if you don’t do winter sports at all.  Cap your Ober Gatlinburg day off with a wine, beer or cocktail at the Loft Lounge, before having a great dinner in town or back at Christopher Place’s own Mountain View restaurant.

Ober Gatlinburg provides all the winter activity and fun for the area, but we can give you an unmatched luxury getaway experience at Christopher Place, your Smoky Mountains resort.  Get in touch with us today, and start dreaming about your snow day here.
