1. Unbeatable location

It’s only a day’s long drive from nearly anywhere on the East Coast to the Smoky Mountains.  For other family members living around the country, they can fly into Knoxville, Chattanooga, Asheville, Tri-Cities Regional, or Nashville and take a nice scenic drive to the Smokies foothills.

Of course, nothing beats that awesome mountain backdrop.  Especially if you hold your reunion in the summertime, it will still be warm.  But family members will appreciate hanging out in the cooler elevation and absolutely love the refreshing evenings.  Simply getting away to an area that’s far from the stress and busyness of daily life will make everyone feel more relaxed and open to fun.

2. Hiking and outdoor exploration of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

You’ve previously heard us extol the wonders of our “backyard,” the National Park, but it bears repeating.  With hiking trails of varying degrees of difficulty but with all offering fantastic scenery at every turn, your family will find their perfect place to trek.  Younger children and older folks can walk on the easier pathways like Porters Creek, Laurel Falls, Grotto Falls.  Kids, teens and adults can attempt something a little more challenging, like Andrews Bald, Alum Cave, Charlies Bunion, Abrams Falls and Rainbow Falls.

Everyone in the family can enjoy the wildlife viewing, the primitive sites and the postcard scenery of Cades Cove.  Depending on what your family prefers doing, you can all drive the loop, hike around it or during the summer pedal on it.

3. Endless options for fun

Besides the Park, each of the towns around it offer something for everyone.  Name an activity, and you can probably do that here.  In Gatlinburg, many families enjoy going on a whitewater rafting trip on the Pigeon River, ice skate at Ober Gatlinburg, get a few chills up the spine at Ripley’s, challenge each other at Fort Fun Mini Golf, and plenty more.  Pigeon Forge features go-kart racing, the Titanic Museum Attraction, WonderWorks and the Outdoor Gravity Park. Finally, Sevierville offers Ripley’s Aquarium, the NASCAR SpeedPark, RainForest Adventures and of course Dollywood.

Be sure to reserve tickets or spaces ahead of time to ensure that your family members won’t miss out on these cool activities.

4. Fantastic food options to enjoy

Part of the fun of a family reunion is having a picnic or barbecue where everyone can bring a favorite dish for all to enjoy.  But you can also find delicious meals all around the Park area, and most restaurants can accommodate large parties.  Another alternative is to hire a caterer who will provide the meal – all you have to do is find the ideal spot.  Plus, you won’t have to worry about cooking or cleanup.  Remember, this a vacation, so take it easy.

Popular restaurant offerings in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville include steakhouses, breakfast buffets, Texas BBQ, pizza, southern meals, ethnic cuisine and more.  Again, make sure you reserve ahead of time to save headaches later on.
