A Taste of Fall

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Nothing says fall quite like an apple orchard, where the scent of fresh apples fills the air and the apple press makes us salivate.

Apples: the fresh taste of fall.

A fabulous place to find fresh apples and apple products is the AppleBarn Cider Mill, in Sevierville, Tennessee. Even getting there is a treat; head west from our Gatlinburg bed and breakfast and drive in the shadow of the mountains for less than an hour. You won’t be able to miss the AppleBarn Cider Mill. If you don’t notice the 4,000 apple trees, the shiny roof on the large, antique barn will catch your eye.

Fresh apples are brought into the barn daily, from September through December. They are pressed into cider, baked into pies, and shaped into dumplings. The biggest problem you’ll have is deciding how many treats you can consume in one visit.

The lovingly restored barn houses an Apple Bar, a Creamery, and General Store. Stop by the winery for a taste of their unique apple and apple-blend wines, and the Candy Factory for Candied Apples or good old-fashion fudge. (more…)

Visit Douglas Lake

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Douglas Lake is just thirty minutes from our bed and breakfast Smoky Mountains TN. This sinewy body of water was created by the damning of the French Broad River in the 1940’s. Today Douglas Lake is a great spot for boating, fishing, and swimming. (more…)

Cades Cove

Monday, September 14th, 2009

About an hour and a half from our Smoky Mountains Inn is Cades Cove, a lovely little valley nestled in the mountains. There is an eleven mile one-way loop that encircles the valley floor and is ideal for a leisurely motorcycle ride. Bring a picnic, and plan to spend between 2 to 4 hours making your way along this incredibly scenic road. As the foliage turns to reds and golds, there is no better place to be.

Plan to spend the day in the valley, as there are many activities. Abrams Creek has excellent trout fishing. Those interested in the history of the Smokies will enjoy the 19th century grist mill, period homes and churches. Patient lovers of wildlife will almost undoubtedly catch a glimpse of Whitetail deer, or, if you are lucky, perhaps a black bear or wild turkey. Allow time to stop your car or motorcycle and stretch your legs along a trail.

Wednesday and Saturday mornings the road is closed to motorized vehicles until 10 am. This allows pedestrians or bicyclists the opportunity to walk or bike in peace through the valley. Please plan accordingly.
