When next you come for a romantic getaway at our Smoky Mountains bed and breakfast, plan on taking your sweetie for a horseback ride in the Cherokee National Forest. Our neighbors at Meadow Creek Mountain offer guided trail rides daily, lasting from one to six hours. If you are experienced riders, you know you’ll like it. If you are novices, it will add a thrill to your holiday.

Horseback riding near our Tennessee bed and breakfast.

Directions to Meadow Creek Mountain: At 4-way stop in Newport (Walgreen’s on corner), turn right onto 25/70. Take 3rd right onto Happy Hollow Rd and follow 2.5 mi to end. Turn right and then immediately left onto Long Creek Rd. Follow 1.9 mi to right onto Browns Chapel Rd. Resort is 1.2 mi. DO NOT DEPEND ON MAPQUEST OR GPS for the last few country miles.

The opening scene of the Sound of Music must be etched in the minds of all who have ever seen it. Somehow it magically captures the essence we feel when we stand atop mountains, stunning views all around. Folks who have hiked to the top of the peak off Max Patch Road, near our bed and breakfast Smoky Mountains, say they feel like Maria, singing with joy.

Hike into these mountains and feel the music in your soul.

Avid hikers and not-so-avid hikers alike will enjoy the walk up to the grassy area at 4,500 feet, as it is only a mile long. You’ll join folks hiking the Appalachian Trail, which traverses the peak, and enjoy views which normally come at a much higher price (ie, more walking). Be sure to bring a picnic, for on a clear day the views are endless, and you may never want to come down off the peak.

But down you will come, back to this Smoky Mountains bed and breakfast. Views from the porch can’t rival those from the peak, but they are awfully nice – and they can be enjoyed sunrise to sunset, with a cool drink in hand. We hope you’ll explore the magnificent region around the inn while you’re here, but we also hope you’ll sit back and relax here, amid our peaceful 200 acres in the woods.

The Sweet Fanny Adams Theatre in Gatlinburg is one of a kind. For over 30 years, it has been creating two original performances a year in the spirit of 1890s music halls. Recently, the Sweet Fanny Adams Theatre was proclaimed a National Historic Treasure of the city of Gatlinburg. The next time you visit our romantic Gatlingburg bed and breakfast, plan to spend a night at this unusual theatre. You are unlikely to see anything quite like it ever again, and laughter is, after all, a wonderful thing.

Definitely Not a Country Music Show

Now through November 20, Sweet Fanny Adams Theatre is alternating two fun shows. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights, watch Not Quite a Fairy Tale, and on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, watch Don’t Worry… It’s Nothing Serious (A Mad-Cap Magical Review). Expect a lot of silliness.

Once the laughter subsides, return to our peaceful Smoky Mountains bed and breakfast and stop by our pub for a nightcap before heading up to bed. In the morning, sleep in and then enjoy breakfast in your room. Discuss the day’s plans over a steaming cup of coffee – tennis? a hike through the inn’s lovely 200 acres? a dip in the pool? Or will you head off to explore the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park?

Mark your calendars for the 35th annual Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair, July 16 thru 24, 2010, and book a room at our Gatlinburg bed and breakfast.

The Craftsmen’s Fair is one of the most popular events in the Southeast. Craftsmen and Artisans from all over the United States gather in Gatlinburg Tennessee to demonstrate their skills and display their work; a jury ensures the products are of the highest quality.

David Ogle. Photo by J. Miles Cary

More than 180 craftspeople are expected to attend, the majority of whom return to the Craftsmen’s Fair year after year. Look for David and Tammie Ogle of Gatlinburg, whose handmade brooms with carved handles have been made by the Ogle family for more than 70 years. Marvel at sleek, sophisticated jewelry created by Sandy Hensley. Admire the original leather designs of PJ Girouard.

In additon to an impressive array of arts and crafts, there will be live music every day. Listen to a fine mix of country, blue grass, and gospel by Dennis Lee and Band, and Keith Longbotham and Band.

At the end of each day, look forward to retreating to our Smoky Mountains bed and breakfast. Once you return to the inn, you need not leave. Swim, play tennis, or hike on our trails. Enjoy a drink and a casual dinner in our English pub, or reserve a table at our more formal dining room. It’s the ideal Tennessee vacation.

This is the fifth year story tellers and musicians have taken to the streets of Gatlinburg with guitars in hand and tales on their tongues. Performers gather in the heart of Gatlinburg at 5pm nightly, and for the next 5 hours, the Parkway transforms from a street into a stage. As many as 18 different groups may perform on any given evening.

Clogging groups, duos and trios take to the streets. Listen for traditional bluegrass and Appalachian music. Listen to tales from Uncle Tubby, Ol’ Rowdy, and Smiley Burdett, and learn about quilting from Quiltin’ Annie. Whatever you do, don’t step out of line during Miss Nan’s lesson.

Enjoy this magical transformation of Gatlinburg when staying at our Gatlinburg area bed and breakfast from now through August 7, 2010.

There are six fantastic golf courses a short drive’s distance from our Smoky Mountains bed and breakfast. Golfers, don’t deny yourselves. Instead, stay at our Tennessee Smoky Mountains lodging for a week this summer, and golf to your heart’s content.

Baneberry Golf is on Douglas Lake. Golfing at Baneberry offers “its fair share of undulating hills, devilish bunkers, lakes and streams – more than enough to challenge golfers of all abilities” (from Baneberry website). Try it. If you want to try it again, (to prove you really could make that one shot) there is a good chance you’ll be able to play a second round in the afternoon. By the time evening rolls around, you should be more than ready to relax in our Gatlinburg area pub.

Bent Creek Golf Course has a unique setting. The first nine holes are on the valley floor, while the last nine are up in the mountains. Designed by Gary Player, three time Masters and British Open Championship winner, this par 72 course is both breathtakingly beautiful and fun to play.

Other nearby golf courses are: Smoky Mountain Country Club in Newport; Millstone Golf Club in Morristown; Dandridge Country Club in Dandridge; and Patriot Hills in Jefferson City. Try them all or focus on a few. Either way, start your day with a delicious filling breakfast at our inn, and you’ll have energy through the very last hole.

Bring your own kayaks or canoe, if you have them, or ask the innkeepers of our Smoky Mountains bed and breakfast about boat rentals at Douglas Lake. It’s possible to rent all types of watercraft, from pontoon boats to jet-skis. Bring your fishing poles, too – bluegill is running at this time of year.

Gather together a group of friends for a weekend of fishing fun, or plan to woo your sweetheart with romantic swims and sunset cruises. No matter who you are with or what you do, you are sure to enjoy exploring Douglas Lake and the surrounding area.

Back at the inn, go for long hikes around our 200-acres, enjoy a game of tennis or a swim in the pool. You’ll feel super after all that exercise. You’ll be hungry and feel entitled to eat well for the rest of the day. You’ll feel relaxed.

Back at our Smoky Mountains inn, plunge in the pool to cool off. Take a nap. You can enjoy a game of tennis, hike through our 200 secluded acres, or have a massage. The day is yours.

No, it’s not an oxymoron. The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a five to six-mile long road that meanders through the Smoky Mountains National Park near Gatlinburg, TN. The road is one way, narrow and winding, thereby requiring travelers to slow down and appreciate the surroundings. Indeed, buses, motor homes, and trailers are not permitted on the road.

Keep an eye out for black bear while on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail

There are many pull-outs along the way, where motorists may take in the views or get out and explore. Old-growth forests, historic buildings, charming old log cabins, and rushing streams and waterfalls are all right there, waiting to be appreciated.

The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is close to our Gatlinburg TN bed and breakfast. It closes each winter, but reopens to the public today, May 28, 2010. So after a delicious breakfast at our Smoky Mountains lodging, hop in the car and head out to nature.

The Gatlinburg Trail is a pleasant place to walk or bike. It follows the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River, affords terrific views of the forest and river. It is ideal for guests of our Gatlinburg bed and breakfast who like to get out in the woods but don’t want a lot of elevation gain, as it is fairly level.

Follow the trail almost two miles between the Sugarlands Visitor Center and the outskirts of Gatlinburg proper, keeping an eye out for remains of old homesites as you walk. The Sugarlands Visitor Center is open daily, and is a great resource; it ’s a good place to pick up maps and books about the history and wildlife of the park.

Back at our Smoky Mountains lodging, you may cool off with a dip in our outdoor pool. If you still have energy, work out in our fitness room, hit the tennis courts, or explore the trails of our 200-acres. At the end of the day, restore yourself with a drink at the pub and relax over a game of billiards. You may dine casually in our Gatlinburg pub, or more formally in our Mountain View restaurant (reservations required).
