Since winter weather appears set on sticking around for a while longer, why not combine a Smoky Mountains romantic getaway with the last ski trip of the season.
One of the most spectacular places to cross-country ski in Tennessee is the road to Clingman’s Dome. Beautiful all year round, it is otherworldly when blanketed with snow. The road is closed to traffic until April 1, 2010 – until then, the road is yours.
Clingman’s Dome is just over an hour from our bed and breakfast Smokies. Enjoy a relaxing and filling breakfast in your room before heading out to ski up the highest peak in the Great Smokies. You’ll enjoy some of the best views in the park, indeed in the whole state. Clingman’s Dome reaches an elevation of 6643 ft. The road gets you just about a half-mile from the peak, and the adventurous (and well-prepared) are welcome to make the steep trek to the top. Views can reach 100 miles on clear days, and span seven states. It’s definitely worth the effort it takes to get there on skis.
When you return to your Smoky Mountains lodge, you’ll be thankful to sink into a deep, hot bath. Then replenish your energy with hearty pub food in Marston’s Pub, or enjoy a more refined meal in our formal dining room. Sitting together by the fire after dinner will be heavenly.
